Edward's test paper dilemma

...desperately, Edward gave Madame Fraude the money she demanded for her services.  She took the crisp twenty dollar bill without giving him back the change. However, he wasn’t concerned about the change. He wanted to know where he had left the large stack of school exam papers he was supposed to hand to Headmaster Wong. He had made a run for it all the way down the streets when Amelia caught hold of him. Instead of heeding Amelia’s advice on seeking help from any teacher in school, he had chosen to consult a fortune teller. Edward’s willingness to believe in fortune telling is rather appalling as Amelia was more of a realistic person. Nonetheless Edward had already paid for her services, she decided to sit quietly and listen.

Madame Fraude sat down and looked at her client with great interest. Edward however was squirming not because he had to sit on a stack of books to be of the same level as Madame Fraude, but because he feared the worst.

Madame Fraude examined the lines on his hands carefully and then said mystically,

“There are five things which will happen to you...”

Edward looked at her intensely as she traced along the lines on his hand solemnly.

The first thing which will happen is this...” Madame Fraude whispered as she held his hand, she looked at him over the brim of her spectacles;

“You will face the possibility of a heavy punishment for committing a very serious mistake.” She paused and then asked;

“Why did you allow yourself such an act of carelessness? The person who tried to distract you intended you to make that mistake!” She shook her head. “You should’ve known better...however...the line you see stretched before you which is going up and down indicates your tendency to fall wayward.”

When Edward gave her a puzzled look, Madame Fraude explained; “You are easily distracted...”

Edward’s ears became red at the mention of that. Amelia grinned. This was true.

“The second thing which will happen is this...” She continued, “You will lose the privileges of a very important post in your school....”

“Are you class monitor...or school president?”

“I...am...the assistant editor of our school newspaper and junior assistant counsellor of our school’s student body. I help dispense advice to peers about their problems.”

Madame Fraude gave him a sideway glance as though examining his qualifications to have such positions in school. “I want to major in psychology or counselling when I go to college, alright?!”

She nodded her head noncommittally.  Then her fingers trailed to another part of his hand and then she said;

“Oh my...oh my...this is not looking good for you.”

“The third thing which will take place is this; you will have to compensate for your errors. This means you will be bound...to your authorities until you’ve paid the full price.”

Edward groaned in despair; “You mean I’ll be grounded...or face expulsion?”

Madame Fraude looked at him apologetically and said “That I am afraid I can’t say...but from either party; parents or teachers, judgement has already taken place.”

Amelia was no longer paying attention to the two, but towards the cat which was sitting beside this ginger haired woman with shamrock green eyes. The orange furred cat  looked coolly as though it understood what its mistress was saying. A moment later it began licking its paws. Amelia leaned forward to have a better look at the feline. She said “Hey....this cat looks familiar...”

“Shush child, can’t you see I’m trying to do my work here?!”  Madame Fraude scolded Amelia.

She blushed and muttered sorry softly as she leaned back on her chair silent now.

“How are your financial handlings on a daily basis?” She asked Edward casually.

“Err...you mean my allowance? Okay, I guess...”

Madame Fraude gave him the look as though she was piercing his soul to discover a hidden lie.

“Fine...fine! I tend to finish my allowance before the week is over okay! I end up doing chores at home, walk dogs or wash people’s cars to earn extra pocket money...” He said, ears becoming red again. His ears reddened whenever he gets shy or embarrassed.

“Well then...I hope you’re ready to perform extra chores because the fourth thing will have you experience financial difficulty.”

Edward’s head hit the surface of the table and sighed in further despair and said;

“Will anything good come out of this?”

Madame Fraude changed the position of his hand and then pressed gently on a particular part of it and said approvingly for the first time;

“Yes.” She said, which made Edward lift his head.

“You will learn quickly from your mistakes and become better because of it. You shall be entrusted with greater things if you do. That is the fifth thing.

 The woman smiled encouragingly. “I shall dispense free advice to you, my child... and it is this;

You have a long journey ahead of you. Making mistakes and learning from them is how we grow and become better people. Do not be afraid of mistakes. Mistakes are the greatest teachers if you allow them to teach you.”

Edward looked at the woman and said “ I think I will go to my principal and admit my mistake before she finds out from another person. I think the punishment might be lighter. I suppose she would appreciate my honesty.”

The woman smiled and nodded. “Admitting your mistakes is the first step to changing into a better person. “ She paused and then clasped his hand, smiling.

“Now, if you please, go outside of this shop and face the music because headmistress Wong is waiting outside for you in her car. She will bring you back to school, in time for your English classes which your grammar homework is due!”

“Also...you have to clean the entire school compound, and collect all the test papers which flew in the air because you left it near an open window!”

“What...how did you know...”Edward’s eyes widened, it became clear to him that Madame Fraude was a fraud! She indeed looked like...like...

“Well, you didn’t think I would  see you, did you Edward? It is I, your English teacher and school counsellor, Ms Jane Smith!”
